Rescue Groups, City Agencies, Neighbors Rescue Abandoned Cats and Dogs
June 22, 2011
In a dangerous, impoverished area of north St. Louis, personnel from Animal House, Stray Rescue, City Animal Control and the St. Louis Police responded to an awful dogfighting and abuse case. Four dogs and at least two cats had been abandoned in a house for more than a month. They had survived thanks to compassionate neighbors, who had tossed food into the house through open, barred windows.
Animal House personnel rescued two cats and set a humane trap for a third cat that was reportedly somewhere inside the house.
Among the beat-up dogs left behind to starve, two were taken to Stray Rescue to be rehabilitated. One of the dogs was in horrible shape from dogfighting and neglect.
A third dog had evidently been used for both fighting and breeding, which is not typical of dogfighters. She was so aggressive because of the cruelty that had been inflicted upon her, she was taken by Animal Control.
The fourth dog, a pregnant female pit bull that was in the house only a few days earlier, was missing. The renter had apparently returned to get her.
In yet another terrible turn to the story, it was apparent that children had been living in the filthy, feces-strewn house.
Because the property owner filed a police report, we hope charges will be brought against those responsible.
The staff and volunteers of Animal House and Stray Rescue would like to thank the City Animal Control officers and St. Louis Police officers who played a vital role in this rescue. We also greatly appreciate the life-saving efforts of the neighbors who reported this case and fed these animals. We are so thankful people are not afraid to come forward to report cases of animal abuse.
